The 27-year-old Finn scorched around the Albert Park circuit in 1:26.072 with five minutes remaining to beat world champion Fernando Alonso's McLaren by 0.421 seconds and take the 12th pole of his career - the first since last year's Italian Grand Prix. Raikkonen had not shown his hand in the second part of qualifying, where he was fourth quickest in the session that produced the fastest times of the afternoon, but made it count when it mattered as he hammered home Ferrari's advantage with a near-perfect display of how to control a Formula One car.
