La ville de Denver a enfin atteint les sommets de la NBA. Après trois Super Bowl (1997, 1998 et 2015) en football américain et trois Stanley Cup (1996, 2001 et 2022) en hockey sur glace, les habitants de la cité du Colorado peuvent célébrer leurs basketteurs. En s’imposant (94-89) face au Miami Heat, lundi 12 juin, dans le cinquième match de la finale, les Denver Nuggets ont mis fin à 47 saisons sans titre dans la ligue nord-américaine de basket. Depuis la création de la franchise, les « pépites » de Denver n’étaient jusque-là jamais parvenues à dépasser la finale de conférence Ouest. Depuis des années, les dirigeants des Nuggets élaborent patiemment une franchise à même de dominer la Ligue. Et le sacre des partenaires du géant serbe Nikola Jokic, sacré MVP des finales, valide le travail de l’ombre commencé à l’orée des années 2010, à la fin de « l’ère Carmelo Anthony », star et artificier de l’équipe.
The Denver Nuggets beat the Miami Heat 94-89 on Monday night to win their first NBA championship after 47 years in the league. Led by two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić, the Nuggets overcame a 10-point deficit in the second quarter to close out the series 4-1. The Heat threatened to make a comeback of their own in the final minutes before a costly turnover by Miami star Jimmy Butler gave Denver crucial free throws. Denver’s Nikola Jokić recorded the first 30-20-10 triple-double in NBA finals history in Wednesday night’s Game 3 win over Miami. “The job is done, we can go home now,” said Jokić, who finished the game with 28 points and 16 rebounds, in an on-court interview after clinching the title. He was also named the finals MVP after averaging 30.2 points, 14.0 rebounds and 7.2 assists across the series. The Serbian All-Star, who was a second-round pick in the 2014 draft, also became the lowest drafted player to win a finals MVP. Denver’s title catapults him into the conversation as one of the all-time great NBA centers. His teammate Jamal Murray was also superb: he averaged 21.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 10.0 assists a game in the finals after missing the entire 2021-22 season with a torn ACL
