With their backs against the wall in a win-or-stay-home Game 4, the Lynx outlasted the New York Liberty in am 82-80 thriller to force a decisive Game 5. The winner-take-all affair is scheduled for Sunday at 8 p.m. ET in New York (ESPN). The game came down to a final Lynx possession with 18 seconds left. They turned to offensive menace Courtney Williams in isolation, but her would-be winner clanked away. However, Bridget Carleton came down with the rebound, and drew a pair of free throws. She made both, leaving two seconds for the Liberty to stun the Target Center crowd. An off-balance Sabrina Ionescu 3-point attempt was well off, and that was it.
The win was another balanced performance by the Minnesota offense, and a tenacious stand by the Minnesota defense. All five Lynx starters scored in double figures, led by Kayla McBride's 19 points. Williams also had 15 points and seven assists, while MVP runner-up Napheesa Collier had 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and her Defensive Player of the Year form guarding Breanna Stewart. Neither team led by more than six points all game, and the Liberty had no shortage of opportunities to clinch their first championship in franchise history. It was fast-paced and messy night, with 15 team turnovers and a combined 10-for-36 night from Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu. Now, the WNBA Finals between the league's top two teams this year — one holding the best record in the East and the No. 1 offensive rating, the other best in the West and No. 1 in defensive rating — will come down to one game in Barclays Center. It's been a huge year for the league's profile, and there's no better way to end it.
