After finishing eighth in the NBA in scoring, Orlando Magic center Shaquille O’Neal was crowned the 1992-1993 NBA Rookie of the Year on May 6, 1993. O’Neal averaged 23.4 points, 13.9 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 1.9 assists in 81 games played as a rookie. His 13.9 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game each ranked second among all players in the NBA. O’Neal became the first rookie since Michael Jordan in 1985 to be named an All-Star.The 7-foot-1 product from LSU helped lead the Magic to a 41-41 record as a rookie, an improvement of 20 wins over the previous season. The Magic narrowly missed the playoffs that season after losing the tiebreaker to the Indiana Pacers.
The arrival of O’Neal helped the Magic reach new heights as an organization after first entering the NBA during the 1989-90 season. After adding Penny Hardaway the following year after O’Neal, the team eventually went on to make the 1995 NBA Finals.O’Neal would ultimately spend the first four seasons of his career with the Magic before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996. His 27.2 points per game average is the second-highest in Magic history.
